Senior Focus: Brooke Peterson

My name is Brooke and I weave scarves. I love when beauty and functionality intertwine. It is extremely important to me that the things I make have lives of their own after I make them. I love how something I have put so much of myself into can later be enjoyed and appreciated by someone else. I would describe my style aesthetic as classic, feminine, minimal, and quiet. I love the white on white look. My two choice materials are tencel—because it takes dye beautifully, has an amazing luster, and is extremely soft—and pony wool—because it felts like a dream and has a lovely texture.

For a while now, I have been very interested in resist felting techniques (wool inset into sections of the weft of the fabric, needle felting, and nuno felting) and seeing how the tencel reacts to that. I am going to transition back into using color in my upcoming work, but in a very subtle way by using soft pastels that slowly creep onto the all white fabric.
