These informal critiques were put in place to give students the opportunity to have a constructive dialogue with students from other departments around campus and this also gives students the chance to present their work in a less formal environment without faculty interaction.  We intend to keep the conversation constructive and considered, so we ask students who are interested to come with questions prepared and ready to engage in the conversation!

Important Info:

• Both critiques will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-9:00 pm.

• Critiques will be in the Warehouse Gallery Space, in the new Fiber building.

• The first 20 minutes will be an open discussion: What would you like to see more in critiques?  What is currently lacking?  How would you like to see the informal critique project continued? What do you want to avoid in your critiques?

• Critique slots, 20 minutes each, will be on a first come first served basis.  Please email Maegan directly at mstracy@kcai.edu if you are interested in being critiqued.

• We expect all critiqued students to be prepared and set up before their assigned critique time.

• All work is welcome!  Finished, in progress, etc.  This is a time for you to get the feedback you need!

• If you do not want to be critiqued you can still join in the conversation!!  All students are welcome to participate!

The Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project will be hosting their annual Open Studios Weekend this weekend Friday from 6:00-10:00 pm and Saturday Noon-3:00 pm.  Open studios gives the Kansas City community a chance to see what the Charlotte Street Studio residents have been doing during their residency term. Visitors will be able to see the work for 20 visual artists including 2012 Fiber Alum Katy McRoberts, Skye Livingston, and Maegan Stracy. Throughout the open studios weekend there will be live performances by the performing arts residents as well as a sneak preview of the studios at the Paragraph gallery.

Line, Pattern, Repeat will open Friday February 8th from 4:00-6:00pm at the new Warehouse Gallery, 4218 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64111. The show will run through Sunday March 3rd. Line, Pattern, Repeat showcases current work from recent Kansas City Art Institute graduates and several Urban Culture Project Residents.

Naomi O’Donnell, Interior Camp

Line, Pattern, Repeat aims to show viewers the inherent connections between current art trends and their fiber process counterparts. A line can be painted, created in space, or a thread pulled through fabric. Many lines together create patterns, both repeatable and abstract. Repetition historically lies at the core of all fiber processes, yet it also plays a starring role in contemporary art through repeated actions and imagery. These works represent the most relevant movements in galleries across Kansas City; yet in the context of the Fiber Department, convey a subtly different notion.

The Warehouse Gallery will host a gallery talk on February 19^th from 12:00-1:00pm that will be open to the public.  Some of the artists will be present to speak about their work, as well as the curators to talk about the show’s conception.

Recent Kansas City Art Institute Fiber graduates, and current Urban Culture Residents, Skye Livingston and Maegan Stracy curated Line, Pattern, Repeat.  Featured artists include, Shae Bishop, Ceramics, 2012; Naomi O’Donnell, Printmaking 2009 and Jacyln Senne Painting 2011. Many featured artists are also Charlotte Street residents, Chris Daharsh, Painting 2012; Madeline Gallucci, Printmaking 2012; Ben Harle, Ceramics 2012; Bobby Howsare, Printmaking 2009; Will Preman, Ceramics 2012.

We have had a successful first week of school and the department is off to a great start.  Tonight is First Fridays, the first one of the new semester and plenty of stuff is going on!!!

Fiber Alum Skye Livingston‘s show Corner to Corner and Head to Toe opens tonight at the Carter Gallery.   The opening will be from 6-9pm with a brief artists talk at 6:00pm.  Be sure to stop by this show, to see what she’s been up to!

Access alumni presents Austerity Measures opening tonight at Cara y Cabezas Contemporary from 6-9pm.  The show features several current Fiber students, Shelby Burchett, Lynn Gross and Carie Allman and was also juried by Fiber faculty member Marie McInerny.  This is a must see! Go out and support your fellow fiber pals.

First on the hit list is the Winter Event/Shop/Market/Bonanza featuring handmade work by our very own Fiber faculty Kim Eichler-Messmer and Erika Lynn Hanson!!! Here you can buy some handmade goodies from both Kim and Erika and cross off some family and friends on your holiday shopping list!! The shop will be at 215 w. 19th Ter. KC, MO 64108 from 6-9pm.

The first exhibition in the new Charlotte Street Studio Residency Program Series; Observation/ Hypothesis/ Experiment: Studio as Laboratory, curated by PLUG Projects, is a group exhibition which explores the idea of the studio as a place to discover and explore, featuring many of the current Charlotte Street Studio residents including 2012 Fiber Alum, Katy McRoberts, Skye Livingston and Maegan Stracy. Other great openings that you should definitely put on your hit list: Playtime: New Works by Matt Jacobs and Dave Rhodes; KCAI Alum host an opening at City Ice Arts Building. Horses & Orifices opens at the Elegant Miss Gallery with work by KCAI Painting alum Stuart Smith and Mary O’Brien. Studios Inc. hosts an exhibition featuring work from the studio’s residents, active KC artists and KCAI alum, and the one night only Snowy Mountain Holiday Showcase debuts Field Trip Publishing’s 2013 collection of handmade limited edition art objects at Utilitarian Workshop.  A busy first friday indeed.

The End of Semester Show is coming up quick!!  This Friday be sure to check out the End of Semester Show and Sale in the New Fiber Building, 4218 Walnut St. Kansas City, MO 64111, right next to the Art Space.  The show will have work from all Fiber majors and even a boutique where you can buy some handcrafted holiday gifts. The opening is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Friday November 30th, and through the weekend Saturday 10:00-5:00 pm and Sunday 12:00 – 5:00 pm.
